Lightweight structure satisfies performance, on the track and on the wrist…

For some time, cheap Porsche Design (the watch manufacturer) has been working closely with Porsche (the car manufacturer) to create very special watches that not only match the specific cars of the series, but can also be fully customized through the configurator. Obviously the inspiration comes from what you can do with a car. The idea is simple but cool, because one can create a watch that perfectly matches his/her new sports car. We know that cars and watches have a lot in common. Following the launch of the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS yesterday, Porsche Design has brought its own track version of the model, equipped with a new customizable flyback chronograph.

If most people know the existence of the 911 (the brand’s logo), then Porsche has more than one model in its series. Another sports car is the 718. This model has been in the shadow of its sister, but it is equipped with some quite attractive specifications, mainly a mid-engine architecture, which is called the ideal position. If Porsche makes the 718 less powerful and slower than the 911 so far, the situation has changed since yesterday. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is basically an internal competitor to another star, the 911 GT3.

Based on Cayman, the GT department’s team installed a 4.0-liter, 500-horsepower GT3 naturally aspirated horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine behind the seat… the promise of high revs and impressive induced noise. The rest of the car is equally eye-catching, all elements are optimized for the track-radical aerodynamic components, complex suspension, streamlined interior… a flexible and lightweight machine chasing milliseconds on the track! And since the weight is lower than the GT3, this will make the 718 Cayman GT4 RS an opponent in removing some of the rubber from the tires.

This is not the first time that Porsche Design has introduced customizable watches related to new Porsche models. We recently saw the Porsche Design Chronograph 911 GT3 or the Porsche Design Chronograph “911 GT3 With Touring Package” version, and today’s formula is similar. The base remains the same, the typical PD chronograph with racing inspiration, but now the brand offers new design options that make this new model a perfect fit with the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

The case is the classic 42mm racing style watch that we are now accustomed to. It is available in natural titanium or black titanium carbide coating. Similarly, you can choose between two bezel designs, with a tachymeter or 60-minute scale, also in black or natural titanium, so you can contrast or unify with the case.

The dial of the Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS continues the connection with the car. The relationship with the electric 718 is reflected in other details, such as the matte black anti-reflective dial inspired by the tachometer of a sports car. It can also order real carbon fiber to get a more racing theme. The dial is decorated in multiple white and signal yellow colors, and the running seconds hand at 9 o’clock bears the “GT4 RS” logo and a stylized checkered flag. There is a ring on the dial, you can choose the same color as the exterior of the car. As a standard configuration, the dial uses an arctic gray ring frame, which is the main color of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

Turning the watch over, the back reveals the Porsche Design Calibre WERK 01.200, which is a COSC-certified proprietary flyback chronograph. Like the previous model, the shape of the rotor is exactly the same as the rim of the car it matches. The Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS is equipped with black leather and Race-Tex strap with embossed logo and decorative stitching in Arctic Grey or Navy Blue. Additional straps/bracelets can be ordered, made of titanium or Porsche leather upholstery in various colors.
