Graham replica is an interesting independent brand. In the past few years, it has successfully imposed its recognizable left-side crown chronograph style on others and introduced some impressive timepieces. It is worth mentioning that the brand cooperated with Christophe Claret Geo Graham Orrey Tourbillon. Today we review the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon, which is part of the Chronofighter series on the left crown.
The history of a great watchmaker
“Honest George Graham”, as the industry calls it, was born in 1673 in Kirklinton, a village in England. In 1688, George followed his friend and mentor Thomas Tompion (Thomas Tompion) to London to study the art of watchmaking. During his career, George Graham invented the mercury pendulum and made many improvements to the pendulum clock. In 1715, he introduced a jumpless escapement in his finely adjusted clock. In 1722, he was appointed boss of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. Graham was a mentor and consultant to other great watchmakers, including Thomas Mudge (lever escapement) and John Harrison (navigational chronometer).
George Graham is also interested in geophysics and he is a member of the Royal Society. He is engaged in astronomy and has made many improvements and inventions to astronomical instruments. He built a mechanical model of the solar system. Orrery was the most complex and accurate planetarium known at the time.
Graham died in 1751 and was buried in the same tomb as his mentor Thomas Tompion. Today, one of his important works, the 28-day long box escapement regulator built in 1745, can be viewed at the Mois Hall Museum.
This modern company was founded in 1995 by Eric Loth, Pierre-André Finazzi and Ernst Thomke. The original name was Les Monts SA. The company’s philosophy is to recall the tradition of the greatest British watchmakers. Under the same roof, two sister brands were released in 1998: Graham and Arnold&Son. In 2001, the company changed its name to The British Masters SA. The company sold Arnold&Son in May 2010 and changed its name to Graham London. Eric Loth, one of the original founders, is still at the helm.
Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Ref. 2CCBK.B30A is the newest member of the Chronofighter series. What was once an exotic material in the watchmaking world is now a bold statement of the brand’s capabilities.
Case, dial and hands
As far as today’s technology is concerned, the use of carbon to design watch cases is nothing new. From a clock point of view, things are a bit different. These new materials are still mixed water that all brands are willing to go to sea. As we all know, the 47mm case is a large size. Black carbon composites are very light. The entire watch weighs less than 100 grams.
Another design feature that allows the Chronofighter to be worn smaller than its size is that the lugs are fairly short and curved downwards. In addition, the crown and buttons are located on the left side, it will not pierce the wearer’s wrist (of course, assuming that the watch is worn on the left wrist). The rubber strap is soft and pliable, which makes a great contribution to comfort. We think that the Clou de Paris pattern gives the rubber strap a good aesthetic.
The bezel is made of 3K black carbon fiber fabric texture, which shines after being polished. This contrasts sharply with the matte surface of the rest of the case. The ergonomic crown protection reveals more weft threads from carbon fiber. Some people may feel that the elaborate design of the button device that activates the chronograph is superfluous. The dial is covered with an arched sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides. This coating helps eliminate unwanted reflections. The back of the case is decorated with smoked sapphire crystals, giving a glimpse of the C1747 movement. The case back is fixed with six screws.
The dial is made of the same carbon fiber processing as the other parts of the Chronofighter Superlight. The front view is a real sporty look: the blue speedometer scale is very attractive. The blue seconds scale that echoes this is also very pleasing to the eye. Visually, it looks great, but in practice, the seconds indicator is difficult to read because the scale has different steps. The other two versions can be printed in red or yellow instead of blue.
The hour markers are in Arabic, and the oversized 12 maintains a sporty appearance. The large and clear hour and minute hands provide excellent legibility. The yellow lacquered chronograph and the seconds hand form a suitable color contrast. ladies watches
The small date window has good clarity between the dial elements, which is unexpected due to its small size and being surrounded by larger items.
Movement: G1747
Smoked sapphire provides an interesting image of the G1747 movement. This movement is based on Valjoux 7750. Graham didn’t make excuses for this choice, we applauded them for using it, because it has proven reliability and usability. The movement has a basic finish with an engineering style. Nevertheless, G1747 still uses the traditional decoration of haute horlogerie: pearl pattern, Geneva wave, brushed and polished.
The 4Hz balance wheel provides a 48-hour power reserve through a single barrel system.
The Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon is a well-designed watch: from a weight of less than 100 grams (including rubber strap), first-class materials and manufacturing techniques to a truly sporty dial appearance. The ergonomic design makes it easier for people with smaller wrists to digest, but it has to be said that it is a big watch. The chronograph is a bold statement from the brand and the owner of the watch.
