The modern interpretation of the disco G383 chronograph

If you don’t know about SJX watches yet (I doubt it), then of course you should. As one of the most respected watch media, SJX (the acronym for the founder of the site Su Jiaxian) is what I call a true nerd, in the best meaning of the word. SJX is technically and knowledgeable and is a must-read book to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. Following the two dedicated “Celebration Watches” launched by Habring² and Kudoke, SJX is now launching a very special, bold and quite unique watch created with Zenith. The new Zenith x SJX Chronomaster Revival Poker Chip is loosely based on the El Primero G383 in the disco era. It is a collaborative effort that was first provided to the watch website and then classically provided through Zenith.

This new Chronomaster Revival Poker Chip pays homage to one of Zenith’s most bizarre designs, the G383. “A truly stylish watch, its design is undoubtedly the style of the late 1960s and 1970s-the dial is on the top, a real disco “Style” said Jiaxian, adding that it is “one of my favorite vintage Zenith models.” But SJX is not a faithful, one-to-one reprint of this watch, except for its very interesting dial design. Also, as far as the case is concerned, it is not the best-looking-it is gold and characteristic very small lugs. Therefore, SJX collaborated with Romain Marietta, Zenith’s head of product development, to create a watch with the same disco style but with a more modern feel.

The basis of this version is well known, because this Zenith Chronomaster Revival Poker Chip relies on the same modern interpretation of the A386 as this model. This means a beautiful historic case and a compact 38 mm diameter. Nevertheless, it is made of micro-sandblasted titanium for the first time, with a “fine dark gray finish, which is then coated to enhance its wear resistance and help prevent fingerprints.” This watch is worn on On the black fabric strap, it also includes an extra fabric strap impregnated with Super-Luminova material-so the entire strap will glow.

Under the sapphire caseback is the most classic El Primero 400 movement among Zenith movements. The reason for choosing this particular movement is first of all historical relevance-G383 also uses the same movement-and, according to SJX, “The mild irony is that it reimagined the aesthetics of vintage watches, but retained The same movement.” The movement is a classic 5Hz automatic chronograph with an integrated frame, column wheel and horizontal clutch. Now to the main attraction, the dial. The modern Chronomaster Revival Poker Chip inherited the style of G383 and transformed it into something more modern and easier to use, but still recognizable as a poker chip. The dial is presented in dark gray and then divided into matte black parts with a Super-Luminova luminous pattern on the top, reproducing the layout of the retro original.
